Pharmacognosy, a branch of the modern pharmacy profession, is often regarded as the origin of medicines. It focuses on the study of drugs derived from natural sources.

In the contemporary context, pharmacognosy encompasses the study of the physical, chemical, biochemical, and biological properties of crude drugs and their derivatives, including the discovery of new drugs from natural sources. They also learn techniques for preparing extracts, purifying them, and identifying the phytoconstituents within. The department is equipped to support the identification, extraction, isolation, and characterization of crude drugs. Additionally, it offers facilities for the formulation and standardization of herbal products.
